Tate Paulette, Associate Professor of History at the North Carolina State University, will present highlights from his new book, In the Land of Ninkasi: A History of Beer in Ancient Mesopotamia, in conversation with Kathryn R. Morgan, Assistant Professor of Mediterranean Archaeology at Duke University. He'll also answer all YOUR questions about ancient beer, brewing, alcohol, and fermentation! Paulette's research centers broadly on urban food systems in the ancient world. His work explores agricultural practices, gastro-politics, and state making in the world’s first cities and states, with a focus on alcohol in Mesopotamia and the Near East. Among other experimental projects, he has spearheaded a collaborative effort to recreate Sumerian beer using authentic ingredients, equipment, and brewing techniques.
Paulette has conducted archaeological fieldwork in Syria, Iraq, Egypt, Turkey, Cyprus, Scotland, and the US, and he is currently co-directing an archaeological field project and field school at the site of Makounta-Voules-Mersinoudia in western Cyprus. In the Land of Ninkasi is his first book.
